Empowering Voices, Expanding Civic Freedoms

Strengthening civil society to foster inclusive participation and democratic governance across Tanzania

Program Overview

The Civic Space Program is dedicated to protecting and expanding the vital space where civil society organizations (CSOs), citizens, and the media can freely operate. At its core, the program champions fundamental freedoms of expression, association, and assembly while enabling active civic participation in decision-making processes.

Through strategic partnerships, robust advocacy, and tailored capacity development, we create an environment where civic voices are not just heard but actively shape the nation’s future. This program goes beyond traditional community mobilization by driving meaningful engagement with government institutions to influence policy, strengthen governance systems, and foster sustainable social change.

Our Impact Across Tanzania

Since its inception (2023–2025), the Uraia Wetu Project has made significant strides:

  • Strengthened the advocacy capacity of over 774 CSOs, leading to tangible reforms in electoral law, youth participation in budgeting, and infrastructure for persons with disabilities.
  • Supported 11 CSO–government dialogues and facilitated 15 sub-grants, empowering organizations to influence change.
  • Contributed to key legislative reforms, including amendments promoting gender equality in political party laws and improved worker protections in Zanzibar’s social security framework.
  • Enabled the Swahili translation of the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, ensuring greater inclusivity in national development planning.

Through these efforts, Uraia Wetu is advancing a more open civic space, fostering responsive governance, and ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities shape the future of Tanzania.
