Empowering Voices, Expanding Civic Freedoms
Strengthening civil society to foster inclusive participation and democratic governance across Tanzania
Program Overview
The Civic Space program by the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) supports efforts to protect and expand the space in which civil society organizations (CSOs), citizens, and media operate. Through strategic partnerships, advocacy, and capacity development, the program fosters an enabling environment for freedom of expression, association, and assembly. It strengthens the role of civil society in promoting accountability, and public participation in decision-making processes.
Our Impact Across Tanzania
The programme advances Civic Engagement Initiative that goes beyond traditional community mobilization by strategically working with government institutions to influence policy, strengthen systems, and drive sustainable social change. Recognizing that systemic challenges are shaped by complex power dynamics, FCS employs a politically smart approach “Thinking and Working Politically” to engage meaningfully with the Executive, Parliament, and Judiciary. This involves building trust-based relationships, aligning with national development strategies, and working with policymakers to influence legislation and uphold rights through judicial reforms. Through this, FCS ensures that its advocacy is grounded in the realities of governance and positioned to achieve long-term impact.
