The Foundation recognizes exemplary CSOs

As was the case in previous years, at the end of this year’s Civil Society Annual forum in Dar es Salaam the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) recognised the best performers in the sector with award-winning trophies

Jumuiya ya Kudhibiti Athari za Madawa ya Kulevya na Mimba katika Umri mdogo (JUKAMKUM) based in ChakeChake, Pemba has emerged as the overall winner of the Civil Society Excellence Awards in 2013.

The organisation received the award in recognition of its tremendous performance on protecting young female children against early pregnancies, advocacy against the use of drags, as well as fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

First runners-up for the 2013 Excellence Awards were the Legal Assistance Organisation (LAO) based in Mwanza region. LAO was recognised for their efforts to assist the majority poor with legal aid. Of late, the organisation has been targeting widows and children on enhancing their inheritance rights, as well as translation and popularizing the inheritance law in simplified version.

The second runners up were Saidia Wazee (SAWATA) based in Kasulu Kigoma, and were awarded for their efforts to empower the elderly through sensitization on the National Ageing Policy of 2003 and help the elderly to protect their rights including access to free medical services.

While any member of the civil society sector in Tanzania is eligible for competing for the Excellence Awards, the Foundation also recognizes the best performers among its own grantees through the Best Grantee award category.

Thus, the Overall Best Grantee award winner for year 2013 was Mkombozi Centre for Street Children. The organisation also came out as the best performers in Policy Engagement Category.

Also, Tanga Civil Society Coalition (TASCO) won an award in the Governance and Accountability category. Busega Children & Development Assistance was awarded as the Best Grantee in Capacity Strengthening category. On the other hand, Jumuiya ya Kuhamasisha Kilimo cha Kisasa Zanzibar was awarded as the best emerging CSO.

The Foundation for Civil Society congratulates all the award winners and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
