Young women in Kinondoni district, Dar es Salaam region have been enabled to embark on film production, catering services and other entrepreneurship skills following an intensive training conducted by Dhahabu Arts Group.

Before indulging in film making and other entrepreneurial skills facilitated through the Youth-to-Youth entrepreneurship fund that is coordinated by the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) with the support from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the youths in the area had been grappling heavily with unemployment challenges.

Dhahabu Arts Group uses arts to provide opportunities for vulnerable girls to unleash their potential and hence provide them with income generation skills.

Project coordinator of the youth-run organisation Ms. Emma Meeda says: “We discovered that a big number of young women in our community live in vulnerable conditions, yet they have a talent in acting, but were unable to develop their talent. Through an intensive entrepreneurship and film production training we are convinced that the girls will definitely have a limited chance to end up in risky behaviors”.

She goes on: “I am pleased to see that our project has inspired over 35 young girls to acquire entrepreneurial skills and venture into film production business.”

Through the training the 35 young women beneficiaries are now in a position to produce video documentaries, short films as well as creating further opportunities through entrepreneurship skills acquired.

Fatuma Omary, one of the beneficiaries of the project says: “the entrepreneurship and film production skills have enabled me to do things that I always had passion with. I have also written my own movie script and helped in filming as well as directing a movie called ‘Manamba wa Mapenzi”.

Another beneficiary of the project, Cecilia Barthlomew says the project has enabled her to employ herself by opening a catering service on a local bar, which is now her main source of income. “I have also improved my acting skills through the film production skills and I have played one movie as the main character and I am waiting for its release,” she says.

The Youth to Youth Fund, implemented by Dhahabu Arts Group has provided lifetime skills to the participants, enabling them to be innovative and come up with business ideas for their income generation as well as creating jobs for others – hence help to reduce income poverty in the country.
