Dr. Tenga elected new President of the Foundation, Kaijage Board Chairperson

    2010
    JUNE
    21st

Members of the Foundation for Civil Society have elected Dr. Stigmata Tenga as the new President of the Foundation for Civil Society and endorsed Mr. Prudence Kaijage as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors.

The election of Dr. Tenga and endorsement of Kaijage were done during the Foundation Members’ Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 9th June 2010 at Zanzibar Beach Resort in Zanzibar. Kaijage was initially appointed as the new Chairperson of the Board in May this year during the Extraordinary Meeting of Members of the Foundation, pending endorsement during the AGM.

Dr. Stigmata Tenga takes over from Alais Morindat who has been the President of the Foundation since 2007 before he requested not to be re-elected again this year.

Members appointed Dr. Tenga to the Board of Directors of the Foundation and Chairperson of the same during the AGM of 2007 and she served as the Chairperson of the Board since then until May this year.

During the Extraordinary Members meeting held on 17th May in Dar es Salaam, resigned from the Board, but Members invited Dr. Tenga to join the Membership and hence she had to resign from the Board.  Members therefore appointed Prudence Kaijage to the position of Board Chairperson.  Prudence Kaijage also joined as a Board Member of the Foundation for Civil Society in 2007.

After the election of Dr. Tenga as the new President of the Foundation, the outgoing President Alais Morindat utilised his farewell speech to advise Dr. Tenga to help in continuing articulating the future of the Foundation as well as facilitate in enhancing its relationship with the government, the donors and other civil society organisations.

Morindat also advised Dr. Tenga to work with the Board and the Secretariat in facilitating organisational capacity building of the Foundation.

On behalf of other Members, Mr. Salum Shamte thanked Mr. Morindat for his able leadership and wisdom during the whole period of his leadership in the Foundation for Civil Society.

He said that, Members were still in need for Morindat to continue to be the President for he was an exemplary leader during the whole period and especially during difficult periods, but considering his request Members agreed his resignation.

Morindat is greatly recognised for his long service to the Foundation for Civil Society, holding different positions in the Board of Directors, in the Council as well as in the Membership.

During the inception of the Foundation for Civil Society, Morindat was the Member of the Board of Directors representing Development Cooperation of Ireland (DCI) before he resigned in 2004.

Early 2005, he was elected as the Vice Convenor of the Council and later in the same year became the Convenor taking over from Elizabeth Ditchburn.

In 2007, major changes were made in the governance structures of the Foundation including renaming of the position of Convenor of the Council into President of the Members, in which Mr. Morindat became the first President.

Meanwhile, during the AGM, Members appointed Ernst and Young as the Foundation’s Auditors for the year 2010 and approved the Annual report and Audited Accounts for 2009.
