TALISDA enables community recognize its role to support the needy

    2010
    JANUARY
    27th

Tanzania Livelihood Skills Development and Advocacy Foundation (TALISDA) has been able to instill a sense of recognition about the importance of taking care for orphans and children living in difficult circumstances in Korogwe, Tanga region.

That has been possible through the funding of Tshs 34,641,650 from the Foundation for Civil Society in the project geared towards capacity building to ward committees and community-based groups on strategies or ways of promoting the rights of vulnerable children.

The organization undertook community sensitization for identification and support of children living in difficult situation.

Aldoph Joseph, TALISDA’s Board Secretary said that after the project, the community was sensitized such that members decided to establish community groups for supporting children in difficult living situation.

He said that 8 different committees have been established in Kwa Mndolwa, Mtonga, Kwa Msisi, Magunga, Old Korogwe, Kilole and Manundu wards.

“Through our survey undertaken after the first project, which was funded with Tshs 4.5 mil., we learnt that the community has gained knowledge and skills,” Joseph said.

Testimonies from community members revealed real change in the community as explained by Joseph.

Sylvester Magagula, Chairman of Kwamndolwa Community Group said that his group has been able to identify 260 children in need, including 200 at primary school and 60 at secondary school.

Magagula said that out of those, the group has been able to pay school fees for 7 children who are in secondary school and to provide clothing and school materials to 50 children in primary schools.

On the other hand, Fatuma Rajabu, Chairman of the Widow group said that training on income generating activities, especially mushroom production has helped widows to lead their life without much dependency and being able to support their families.
